Also known as Terreiro do Paço, it is one of the most emblematic squares in Lisbon and one of the main tourist attractions in the city. In the riverside area, next to the Tagus River, the square is a historical and architectural landmark of great importance. It was originally conceived as a symbol of Portugal's power and wealth during the period of the Discoveries. It was built after the devastating earthquake of 1755, which destroyed much of the city, including the former Royal Palace. Padrão dos Descobrimentos is an impressive monument located in Lisbon, Portugal, on the banks of the Tagus River, in the Belém district. Also known as Monument to the Discoveries, it was built to honor Portuguese navigators and the period of great maritime discoveries. The Padrão dos Descobrimentos was erected in 1960, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of Infante Dom Henrique, known as the Navigator.
