The commerce square was the center of commercial life in the city of Lisbon. Where ships from the Age of the Discoveries used to dock fulfilled with spices, silks and slaves that would be then commercialized to local retailers. It was also where the national palace was located before its destruction in 1755, caused by the immense earthquake that hit Lisbon.

We can find the equestrian statue of King Joseph the first at the center of the commerce square. This statue represents victory over the 1755 earthquake.
