    2. Few places in the world carry the spiritual weight of Assisi. This perfectly preserved medieval hill town was the birthplace of Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone - known to the world as Saint Francis - whose radical embrace of poverty, nature and humility changed Christianity forever. Visit the magnificent Basilica di San Francesco, where Giotto's legendary frescoes tell the story of his life across walls of breathtaking Gothic architecture. Discover the Basilica di Santa Chiara, resting place of Saint Clare and home to the original San Damiano Cross. And descend to Santa Maria degli Angeli - the vast basilica built around the tiny Porziuncola chapel where Francis gathered his first followers and where he died in 1226.
