   Volendam

   The fishing village of Volendam is a completely different world, just a short ride from Amsterdam. The 22 thousand inhabitants of the village at the Markermeer have their own traditions, costumes, music, and dialect different from the rest of the Netherlands. Explore the picturesque village with its centuries-old typical houses, have a delicious fish lunch in one of the excellent restaurants at the dike, learn about 'palingroken' and even the 'palingsound' in the Volendam Museum, and watch the fishing boats in the port. Visit a cheese factory and learn how clogs are made from one of the last remaining clogs makers. It is also possible to take the boat to the charming island village of Marken.

   When visiting Volendam, the passage to the peninsula Marken is a must! Walking around in Marken is a real Dutch experience. The view from the water of the folklore Volendam cannot be described by words. It does not get any better than this according to us. That is exactly why we have been providing this boat experience for almost 100 years.

   As a guest on the ships of the Volendam Marken Express, you will experience the island feeling from the moment you get on board. Enjoy the snacks and drinks in The Captains Bar during the passage, which takes around 30 minutes. Listen to stories of our crew or follow the audio tour (also in English!) to learn more about both old harbor villages. Whether you sit on on the lower or upper deck of our boat, you feel completely free when you sail on the waters of the Markermeer.

   From Volendam you continue by boat to Marken, a former island in the same Markermeer, now connected to the mainland by a dike. The village of Marken, famous for its wooden-paneled houses on stilts and its characteristic drawbridges, is a magical place. Discover the small streets lined by wooden houses with orange tiled roofs, explore the old fishing harbor and walk around the island. There is also a clog factory where you can see a clog maker at work, and a museum about the traditions of Marken.
