   The origins of the Monastery of Christ date back to the 12th century, when King Afonso Henriques gave the territory of Tomar to the Knights Templar, who founded a monastery here, famous for its round church. Today the monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist destination. The church is an icon of Gothic, Manueline and Renaissance architecture. Perched on a hill above the town, it offers an enchanting panoramic view. Tomar is blessed with a tranquil setting along the Nabão River. The beautiful Mouchão Park is the perfect place for a peaceful stroll or a picnic. Wander around the town and you will find picturesque squares, artisan shops and cosy cafés. The annual Festa dos Tabuleiros adds to the festive atmosphere of the town, a colourful celebration of the high headdresses worn by the locals.
