Später wurde es ein Gefängnis sowie ein Ort der Hinrichtungen Öffentlichkeit in Florenz und schließlich war es auch ein Kloster. Das Museum, das wir heute kennen, beherbergt eine Vielzahl von Werken der Kunst, meist Skulpturen, Statuen und Reliefs der älteren Florentiner Renaissancekünstler wie Lucas schöne Terre Cotte Andrea Della Robbia, die Statuen von Donatello, Mino Da Fiesole, Desiderio Da Settignano, die Bottega dei Rossellino, die Bronzeformelle für das Baptisterium von Florenz von L. Ghiberti und F. Brunelleschi, Werke von Giambologna Cellini und einige frühe Werke von Michelangelo.
