Die große grüne Fläche, die regelmäßig unterteilt ist, bildet ein wahres Freilichtmuseum, bevölkert von antiken und Renaissance-Statuen, geschmückt mit Höhlen, vor allem der berühmten von Bernardo Buontalenti, und großen Brunnen, wie der von Neptun und Ozean. Die nachfolgenden Lorena- und Savoyen-Dynastien bereicherten die Struktur weiter und erweiterten die Grenzen, die an die alten Stadtmauern angrenzen, bis zur Porta Romana.
