Carved by the young Michelangelo from a single, enormous block of rough marble over the course of three years, the David is an imposing sculpture of extraordinary beauty and one of the greatest icons of the Renaissance. The artist portrayed a magnificent young man at the peak of his physical strength, with an intense expression of courage, determination and inner power. More than a masterpiece of sculpture, the David became a symbol of the strength and independence of the Florentine Republic during one of the most glorious periods in the city’s history. At the end of the guided tour, you may remain inside the museum and continue exploring at your own pace.
