   The square is one of the largest in Europe, measuring around 180m x 200m. It was used as the residence of King Manuel I from 1511, along with his library with over 70,000 volumes. However, the 1755 Lisbon earthquake destroyed King Manuel I's residence, as well as his enormous library, and it was after the square was rebuilt by Marquês de Pombal that it became one of Lisbon's most important tourist attractions.

   Anyone who knows the Champs-Elysées (in Paris) can easily find similarities with "our" Avenida da Liberdade.
