   Zwinger and Semperbau

   The Zwinger, completed in the 18th century as a venue for court festivals, is one of the most important Baroque buildings in Germany with its ornate pavilions and gardens, galleries and sculptures. It is one of the most visited monuments in Dresden and Saxony. The Zwinger is a complex of six Baroque buildings in the city centre. The grounds are decorated with Baroque statues and a beautiful park. There are three museums in the complex. Here you will find the Old Masters Picture Gallery, the Mathematical and Physical Salon with old scientific instruments and the Porcelain Collection with exhibits from all over the world. The castle is located next to the famous Semper Opera House and the cathedral on Opera Square.

   Moritzburg Palace

   Moritzburg Palace is one of the jewels of Baroque architecture. It is set in romantic countryside amidst a flowering garden on the banks of a picturesque pond. Originally a hunting lodge, it was rebuilt in 1742 to its present impressive appearance. Inside are extensive collections, including the oldest German billiard table, dating from 1720. There is a museum of furniture and porcelain from Meissen, Dresden and Asia, a collection of tapestries and a collection of hunting trophies. The most valuable antlers are from Russia, said to have been brought as a gift from the Russian Tsar Peter I. An interesting feature is the feather room, called the Federzimmer. The entire bed is covered with nearly two million bird feathers of various colours. You will also be fascinated by the furniture, paintings and leather wallpaper with drawings. The castle is home to one of the oldest active stud farms in Germany. Racehorses have been bred here since 1828.

   Meissen has more than a thousand years of history and is famous for the discovery of Meissen porcelain, known as 'white gold'. You can see how porcelain is made at the Meissen Porcelain Museum. The city is dominated by the Gothic Albrechtsburg Castle. This remarkable 15th century fortress is a symbol of the city's historical importance. Visitors can explore the magnificent rooms, admire the imposing walls and enjoy panoramic views over the Elbe valley. Close to Albrechtsburg Castle is Meissen Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. A walk through the charming old town of Meißen is like stepping back in time. The cobbled streets wind through a network of historic buildings, quaint shops and cosy cafes. The heart of the old town is the market square, home to the town hall, a beautiful Renaissance building decorated with colourful frescoes. Don't miss the opportunity to taste Saxon specialities such as sauerbraten, bratwurst and the local dessert, Eierschecke.
