   Sultanahmet Square or the Hippodrome of Constantinople

   Sultanahmet Square or the Hippodrome of Constantinople is a square in Istanbul, Turkey. Previously, it was a circus that was the sports and social center of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. Horse racing and chariot racing were popular pastimes in the ancient world and hippodromes were common features of Greek cities in the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine eras. The hippodrome was filled with statues of gods, emperors, animals and heroes, including some famous works that can be seen today, such as the Serpent Column, the Obelisk of Thutmose III and the Walled Obelisk.

   Blue Mosque

   The Blue Mosque in Istanbul, also known by its official name, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, is a historic imperial mosque from the Ottoman era. The Blue Mosque was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1985 under the name 'Historic Areas of Istanbul'. Hand-painted blue tiles adorn the interior walls of the mosque, and at night the mosque is bathed in blue as lights frame the five main domes, six minarets and eight secondary domes.

You can meet your guide in front of the green-domed German Fountain at the entrance to Sultanahmet Square. It is very easy to walk from any hotel in the Sultanahmet area to here. If you are coming from other areas, you can get off at the Sultanahmet stop using the tram.
