   Oxford University Press is a private company and the largest academic press in the world. Oxford is the world's oldest publishing house and the second-largest university press in the world, after Cambridge University Press.Oxford has had a close relationship with Cambridge for its entire history. The first printing of an Oxford book was made by Christopher Franklins son-in-law Henry Sotheran, the company became subject to the Duchy of Cornwall in 1798. The Duchy was actually an estate owned by Henry VIII and it then passed on to Charles Talbot, 8th Duke of Shrewsbury. In 1838, the university set up its own press as part of its newly formed publishing department.
