   Circus Maximus

   The largest stadium in history, and still the widest open space in central Rome. We drive the length of the old track while the sun rises over the imperial palaces on the Palatine, whose emperors watched the races from their own private balcony. Your guide sets the scene: the four racing teams and their fanatical supporters, the twelve starting gates, and the seven laps that could make a slave the richest man in the city.

   A terrace of orange trees on the Aventine Hill, laid out over the ruins of a medieval fortress, with all of Rome spread out below the wall. At this hour the rising sun is behind you, so the light hits the city head-on: the dome of St Peter's, the Tiber bend, and the rooftops of Trastevere all turning warm while the streets below are still asleep. It's the quietest viewpoint in the city and, for most guests, the photograph they end up keeping.

   Piazza della Bocca della Verità

   A great marble disc carved with the face of a river god, set into the portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. It began life as a drain cover in the ancient cattle market that filled this square, but the medieval legend stuck: put your hand in the mouth and lie, and you'll never pull it back whole. At sunrise you'll have the portico and the church's slim brick bell tower entirely to yourself — no queue, which any other hour of the day is a small miracle.

   A perfect ring of twenty Corinthian columns standing in the open just across from the Mouth of Truth, and the oldest marble building still standing in Rome. Merchants raised it to Hercules around 120 BC, in the middle of the cattle market that was the city's river port, and it survived because it was quietly turned into a church in the Middle Ages — long enough for people to start calling it a Temple of Vesta, a name that never quite went away. In the first light it's the one stop where you can walk a full circle around an ancient temple with nothing and no one in the frame.

   Its rectangular neighbour, dedicated to the god who watched over the river harbour that once unloaded ships at the foot of this square. Built in the same era but in a very different style — Ionic columns, half of them embedded in the wall itself, a trick that gave the small building the presence of a much grander one — it owes its survival to the same accident of history: consecrated as a church in the ninth century and used as one for the next 900 years. Standing side by side at first light, the round temple and this one give you the two faces of Roman architecture in a single frame, with the Palatine rising behind them.

   A mountain of blinding white marble at the foot of the Capitoline Hill, built to celebrate Italy's unification and the country's first king, and finished in 1935 after fifty years of work. Romans have never quite forgiven it — they call it the typewriter, or the wedding cake — but nothing else in the city has this scale, and at sunrise the marble goes from cold white to pale gold in a matter of minutes. At its centre burns the eternal flame of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded day and night, and from the steps you look straight down Via dei Fori Imperiali to the Colosseum

    Pantheon

    The best-preserved building of ancient Rome, and after nearly 1,900 years still the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built, with a single round opening at its top left open to the sky. Hadrian raised it around 126 AD on the site of an earlier temple, whose inscription he kept across the front — which is why the façade still credits Agrippa, a man who had been dead a century. Arriving at dawn means seeing Piazza della Rotonda the way almost no visitor does: the fountain and the obelisk to yourself, the sixteen granite columns catching the first light, and none of the crowd that fills this square from mid-morning until midnight.

    Piazza Navona

    Rome's most theatrical square, and one that still has the exact shape of the stadium it was built on: Domitian laid down a running track here in 86 AD, and the buildings simply grew along the curve of the grandstands. At its centre stands Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers, four giants representing the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube and the Río de la Plata, with an Egyptian obelisk balanced above them on what looks like nothing at all. At this hour the square is at its best — the fountains running, the pavement wet from the morning wash, the tables not yet out, and only the sound of the water in a space built to hold thirty thousand people.

    Trevi Fountain

    Rome's grandest fountain fills an entire palace façade with a sculpted sea: Ocean riding out through a rocky arch, drawn by two horses, one wild and one calm, standing for the moods of the water itself. Designed by Nicola Salvi and built between 1732 and 1762, it was finished by Giuseppe Pannini, fed by an aqueduct the Romans opened in 19 BC and still running today — which is what you hear before you see it. Toss a coin over your left shoulder and, as everyone here will tell you, Rome makes sure you come back.

    Spanish Steps

    A cascade of 135 travertine steps curving up from Piazza di Spagna to the twin-towered church of Trinità dei Monti, designed by Francesco De Sanctis in the 1720s and paid for by a French diplomat's bequest — which is why Rome's most Spanish-sounding staircase is, in fact, entirely French. At the foot of it sits the Barcaccia, Bernini's half-sunken boat of a fountain, still fed by the same ancient aqueduct that supplies the Trevi. Climb to the top before the city wakes and you get the view down Via dei Condotti with the shutters still closed, the obelisk above you catching the first sun, and a staircase that by mid-morning holds several hundred people entirely to yourself.
