Explore Terezin, originally a military fortress built in the 18th century by Emperor Josef II, and learn about its role in World War II. Visit the Small Fortress, a former Gestapo prison, and the Ghetto museum in the Big Fortress, which served as a collection camp for Jews and was used for Nazi propaganda. Discover the history of Terezin, where 34,000 people died from disease and hunger. Learn about its 15 kilometers of underground tunnels that served as escape routes. Hear about the Big Fortress, originally home to 5,000 residents, which became a ghetto for around 60,000 Jews during the war. Visit the National Cemetery of Terezín, which has 2,386 graves, and gain a deeper understanding of the Holocaust and World War II.
