Sultanahmet square used to be a hippodrome in the Eastern Roman period. The fountain is a gift from German Keiser Willheim the second to the Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamit the second and was placed at Sultanahmet square on the birthday of the Sultan. It represents the forming alliance between Ottomans and Germany. It has a gothic style of architecture and symbols of Keiser and Sultan were engraved in the inner dome.
