   you chose before and will lead you to Siena with its extraordinary historical and artistic heritage and its unique landscapes. You will visit Piazza del Campo, a large shell shaped square, where many medieval and perfectly preserved buildings stand: the Public Palace with its 14th-century bell tower known as the Mangia Tower, which is one of the tallest ancient towers in Italy (88 meters) and the Cappella di Piazza (1352), built to thank the Virgin by those people who had survived the Black Death. In the middle of the square you will see the Gaia Fountain, the first public fountain, which is a mixture of Gothic tradition and Renaissance innovations. Twice annually (July 2nd and August 16th) in Piazza del Campo it is held the Corsa del Palio, the famous horse races of medieval origin in which the various contrade” face. Then you will visit the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral, whose interiors house some Pinturicchio’s frescoes and Michelangelo’s statues, and the magnificent Baptistry (16th century) with its hexagonal baptismal font made from marble, bronze and enamel: this is a main example of the early 15th-century Renaissance sculpture created by the cooperation of the most well-known artists of that time (one of them was Donatello).

   Your day trip will then take you to San Gimignano, a small Tuscan town with a perfectly preserved center dated

   back to the Middle Ages, except for some 19th and 20th-century renovations. The village stands on a high hill in Val d’Elsa, surrounded by almost two kilometers long walls with five Entrance Gates. Walking through alleys and little streets where the time seems to have stopped, you will admire the Church of Collegiata (the Cathedral), a 12th-century church with a nave and two side aisles and totally frescoed walls, including valuable works by Benozzo Gozzoli; the Chapel of Santa Fina, inside the Collegiata, a real Renaissance jewel, which is famous for its fresco cycle by Ghirlandaio; Piazza della Cisterna, with a monumental travertine well in the middle of the square; the Cathedral Square, with the Palazzo Comunale, the Loggia del Comune and the 54 meters high Torre Grossa, which is the tallest one in the town. Notice that San Gimignano had over seventy towers in the Middle Ages, while only thirteen are left nowadays. Local typical products are the saffron and the Vernaccia wine, which has been appreciated since Dante and Boccaccio’s time.
