The square owes its name to the Collegiate Church, which has been there since the 11th century, while the current appearance of the square took shape in the first half of the 13th century, during the golden period of the economy and political importance of San Gimignano . The main public buildings and the "rotation" of the cathedral date back to that period, with a new facade opposite the old Palazzo del Podestà.
