During this fantastic period, the city set up a huge network of trades all over the globe that, in a few years, made its citizens the richest and most powerful in the world. This wealthy period also gave birth to many aspects of our modern society, like Liberalism and Capitalism. This tour is an adventurous journey through the streets and the places where this fantastic period started, developed and inexorably ended, leaving an indelible mark in this city and our daily lives.

    1. Basilica of St. Nicholas

      Sint Olofskapel (Saint Olof’s chapel)

      Sint Olofskapel (Saint Olof’s chapel) was built between 1440 and 1450, making it the oldest chapel in Amsterdam. It was built in honor of saint was Saint Odulphus from the Dutch province of Brabant – the patron saint of the dykes.

    3. De Bijenkorf

      Originally one of Amsterdam’s three city gates when built in 1488, it was transformed into a weighing house when the city expanded in the 1600s.

    4. Built in 1666 for two wealthy brothers, this 22 metres wide house is the most spacious residence in Amsterdam and one of the symbols of Amsterdam's Golden Age.
