The Hippodrome of Istanbul, originally built as the Hippodrome of Constantinople, was a large ancient arena used primarily for chariot races and public events it was constructed in the early 3rd century AD by Emperor Septimius Severus and significantly renovated and expanded by Emperor Constantine the Great in the 4th century to accommodate over 100,000 spectators in a U-shaped structure with grandstands and an imperial box connected directly to the Great Palace.
