Hagia Sophia
The Hagia Sophia Museum (Hagia Sophia, Santa Sofia)
The Hagia Sophia Museum (Hagia Sophia, Santa Sofia) was built in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian and plays a significant role in both the Christian and Islamic worlds. After the Ottoman conquest, the bells, altar, iconoclastic vessels, and sacrificial vessels were removed, and most of the mosaics were plastered over. The church was converted first into a mosque, then into a museum, and now back into a mosque. Constantinople, the Old City, is the most important and impressive stop on any Istanbul tour.
