During the 19th century Ottoman Empire, the street was known as Grande Rue de Pera and the district became a center for foreigners, Levantines, Ottoman intellectuals, and western culture admirers.
Dolmabahce Palace, built in the 19th century is one of the most glamorous palaces in the world. It was the administrative center of the late Ottoman Empire with the last Ottoman Sultans residing there. Dolmabahçe Palace is closed to visitors on Mondays.
