Nearly wiped out by a massive fire in 1988, Chiado has since risen from the ashes to become one of the most bustling, cosmopolitan areas in the city. Peer inside fashionable shops and trendy cafes, and see the ruins of the romantic Carmo Church (Igreja do Carmo). Visit the Bica neighborhood, located along a steep hillside. See the network of steep streets and stairs built to adapt to the slope, which contribute to the neighborhood’s distinctive personality.
