   The origins of Sesimbra Castle date back to the 9th century, during the period of Muslim occupation of the territory. In 1165, it was conquered by King Afonso Henriques, but in 1191 it was lost to the Almohads. Its definitive reconquest was carried out by King Sancho I in 1199, who granted the first charter to the village of Sesimbra, which at the time was located within the castle walls.
