Alfama
Alfama is the oldest and most charming neighborhood in Lisbon, and a walk through its streets feels like stepping back in time. It is a maze of narrow, winding alleys, colorful houses, and steep stone stairs that hide surprises at every turn. As you wander, you will see laundry drying on balconies and hear the soulful sound of Fado music drifting from small, cozy restaurants. This area survived the great earthquake of 1755, so it still keeps its ancient, village-like feel right in the middle of the busy city.
There is so much to see here, from the hilltop São Jorge Castle to the beautiful viewpoints where you can look out over the red rooftops and the blue river. You can hop on the famous yellow Tram 28 to ride through the hills or simply get lost in the tiny squares where neighbors sit and chat. Alfama is the true soul of Lisbon, full of history, friendly faces, and a magical atmosphere that you will never forget.
