Under Louis VI, the church was built in the 12th century on top of the ruins of a Roman temple dedicated to Mars.     4. This church is the second oldest in Paris and has roots back to the Merovingian period. It was built on top of the ruins of an Ancient Roman temple dedicated to the god Mars, which is likely where the neighbourhood of Montmartre gets its name from.
