This large underground cistern, built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I (527–565), was popularly known as the "Yerebatan Palace" due to the marble columns rising from the water, which give the impression of a palace. It is also known as the Basilica Cistern because a basilica once stood at the location where the cistern was built.
