Piazza San Pietro is the square in front of the Basilica of San Pietro. Located on the edge of the historic center of Rome, at 19 m s.l.m., [1] the square is part of the Vatican City and is bounded by the border with the Italian State; through the Borgo district lying to the east, the main entrances are from via di Porta Angelica or via della Conciliazione. The Janiculum is a Roman hill, overlooking the right bank of the Tiber, whose maximum height is 88 meters, not falling within the group of seven traditional hills. The eastern slope slopes down towards the river and at the base is the historic district of Trastevere, while the western one, less steep, is the oldest part of the modern Monteverde district to the south-west of the hill is situated Villa Doria Pamphili, while on its eastern slopes is the Botanical Garden of Rome and the Regina Coeli prison. Together with Monte Mario and the Pincio it is one of the most panoramic places in the city with a view to the east of the neighboring districts and the historic center with the major architectural monuments of the city up to the Alban Hills, the Tiburtini Mountains, Prenestini and the major peaks of the Apennines central western (Terminillo, Velino, Monti Simbruini).
