The current temple is located on the site of a church built in 1568, by order of Infanta D. Maria, daughter of D. Manuel I, to receive the reliquary of the virgin martyr Engrácia of Zaragoza and on the occasion of the creation of the parish of Santa Engrácia. This ancient church was built on the site of a mid-12th century temple, but was severely damaged by a storm in 1681. The first stone of the current building was laid the following year, in 1682.
