Dopo il grande incendio del 64 d.C., L'imperatore Nerone ricostruì il cuore di Roma come il suo colossale palazzo del piacere, completo di una sala da pranzo rotante e un enorme lago artificiale. Quando Nerone cadde nel 68 d.C., i suoi successori seppellirono l'intero complesso per cancellargli la memoria... e sulla cima del suo lago costruirono il Colosseo. Per secoli, la Casa d'Oro ha dormito nascosta sotto la terra. Oggi, dopo anni di attento restauro, sono di nuovo aperti i saloni superstiti, gli affreschi e le grandi volte.
