Noble and more powerful families competed to build the most impressive and magnificent palace, as a tangible sign of their wealth and nobility. In 1865, on the occasion of the sixth centenary of the birth of Dante Alighieri, instead of the ancient gate of Ruio, two towers were built, from which the current name of Porta Dante derives.
