The Basilica of San Domenico
The Basilica of San Domenico is one of the most important churches in Siena and is located between the square of San Domenico and Via della Sapienza. Duomo di Siena (visit outside), is a medieval church in Siena, Italy, dedicated from its earliest days as a Roman Catholic Marian church, and now dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Built between 1214 and 1263, it has a Latin cross structure, a not very protruding dome with the bell tower next to it. Both the exterior and the interior are decorated in blocks of white marble which are alternated with thinner greenish black stripes, these are the representative colors of Siena.

Piazza del Campo has the shape of a shell divided into nine sections, in memory of the Nine Lords who governed the city at the end of the thirteenth century and amazes with its elegance and its unique shape in the world. Called this way because in the past it was a green space that hosted the market, Piazza del Campo today is the city's living room and the open-air arena where the famous Palio is run twice a year. Every year, on 2 July and 16 August, the piazza paved in pietra serena is covered with a layer of earth, composed of a mixture of tuff and sand, in which the horses of the districts challenge each other in a rapid race.
