You will meet your guide at your hotel and enjoy a wonderful, private tour of the Accademia Gallery. The guide is an Art Historian and not only will you learn about Michelangelo’s famous statue of David ( which became the enduring image of the Republic of Florence), but also see other noted sculptures by this prodigious artist; I Prigioni and San Matteo (St. Matthew) as well as the Accademia’s other artworks of religious paintings and panels.
After you meet with your guide you walk to one of the city’s top museums, the Accademia. The museum has many famous artworks, the most famous being of course the legendary, youthful statue of David, which became the enduring image of the Republic of Florence. Take time to walk around this collosal statue and appreciate its true magnificence from every angle. Cut from a single square of Carrara marble this masterpiece was executed when Michelangelo was in his mid-20’s. It is 17 feet (5.17 metres) tall and represents the biblical figure of David who slayed the giant Goliath. In 1504 this statue came to symbolize the defense of civil liberties embodied in the Republic of Florence. In addition to David the Accademia houses several incomplete works by Michelangelo as well as other artworks by Botticelli, Paolo Uccello and Andrea del Sarto to name a few.
