La Fenice "the phoenix" earned its name three times over: it burned down in 1774, in 1836 and again in 1996, and each time Venice rebuilt it exactly as it was. In one hour, with entrance included and a guide who knows the building, you walk into the gold-and-red horseshoe auditorium where Rossini, Bellini, Verdi and Stravinsky premiered works, see the royal box and the Apollonee rooms, and hear how an opera house survives a city built on water. Most visitors to Venice walk past the door without ever going in.
