About 16,000 are living in the ancient town centre enclosed by its medieval walls. Avignon is one of the few French cities which preserved its city walls. Between 1309 and 1377, during the Avignon Papacy, seven successive popes resided in Avignon. In 1348 Pope Clement VI bought the town from Joanna I of Naples. Papal control persisted until 1791 when, during the French Revolution, it became part of France. The historical centre including the Palais des Papes, the cathedral, and the Pont d'Avignon—became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Numerous staircases and five circular galleries provide optimum circulation. Divided according to their social rank among the 34 tiers of seats, more than 23,000 visitors could attend combats between gladiators or animals. Today, the amphitheatre forms a fine venue for many occasions—bullfights, congresses, concerts and sports events.

The Roman Monuments of Arles were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1981.
