   This is where Anne Frank lived before she went into hiding. We can only see her house from the outside but we will provide a link to a website with the reconstructed interior. In the park is a small statue of Anne Frank

   On the original site in the woods of Vierhouten the Hidden Village has been reconstructed. It housed people in hiding who were helped by the resistance. Although many people knew of its existence it was not betrayed. The village was accidentally discovered by hunting Germans and raided. People that could not flee were shot.

   The South-African writer Irma Joubert has written a novel around this place "Het meisje uit het verscholen dorp". Unfortunately not yet available in English.

   After a visit to the Remembrance Center exhibition we take the shuttle bus to Westerbork Concentration Camp. Westerbork was a transit camp used as a staging area for the deportation of about 102.000 Jews and 245 Roma. To deceive the people of the fate that awaited them the conditions in the camp were less severe. There were no beatings and killings. It is estimated that more than 300 people managed to escape the camp.

   Enclosing Dike

   After the terrible flood of 1916 it was decided to seal off the Dutch Southern Sea. The Closure Dam was build between 1927 and 1932. We cross the closure dam and stop at the statue of its architect, dr. Lely for refreshments and a look around the Closure Dam monument.
