   It was in the small village of Aljustrel, located about 2 km from the sanctuary of Fátima, that the three visionaries of Fátima were born – Lúcia and her cousins ​​Francisco and Jacinta who shared the shepherding tasks with her.

   Very similar in design and simplicity, the single-story houses that the little shepherds lived in can be visited. The house where the brothers Jacinta and Francisco lived was built in 1888 and is located about 200 meters from their cousin Lúcia's house, dated 1885. Next to the latter is the Aljustrel House-Museum, which displays implements agricultural items, kitchen utensils, clothes and furniture showing visitors what the daily life of these mountain populations was like at the beginning of the 20th century.    Alcobaça

   The Alcobaça Monastery is closely linked to the affirmation of Portugal as an independent kingdom (1139-1179). It was founded on the initiative of the first king, D. Afonso Henriques, by donation to Bernardo de Claraval, dated 1153. It reflects, like few monuments, the aesthetic sobriety preached by St. Bernard and the rigor and austerity of the Cistercian Order. The works began in 1178 and were completed around 100 years later. In the church, the master masons of the Cistercian Order experimented with what was, at the time, a new “mode” of construction – Gothic – introducing this new architectural language into Portuguese territory.
