Then it is outside again to see the Arch of Constantine and the Roman Forum.  The forum was the empire’s hub where everything happened

political, religious and social. There is the 1st century Arch of Titus, the House of the Vestal Virgins, the Temple of Saturn, the Senate House and the white marble Arch of Septimus Severus to name a few.

You then arrive at the Capitoline Hill following a short walk up the Sacred Way.  Here is one of the most famous and breathtaking monuments of modern-day Italy, Il Vittoriano.

Another short walk down a narrow “vincolo” brings you to the Pantheon where you can visit the tomb of the Renaissance painter and architect Raphael.  The day finishes with another walk, past the Ancient Baths of Nero to Piazza Navona and Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers.

On the next part of the tour you can travel at your own pace and see some of the rooms not on the usual tourist itinerary. You meet with your guide at the entrance to the Vatican museums and head straight for the Belvedere Courtyard followed by the Pio-Clementine Museum with its wonderful display of statues from ancient Rome and Greece.

Then the tour continues to see some of the museum’s artworks: the Gallery of Tapestries; the Gallery of Maps that is home to an unparalleled collection of Renaissance Maps; the Sobiesky Room where you will see the Vatican’s largest canvas and the wonderful frescoes in the Immaculate Conception Rooms.

home of the conclave to elect a new Pope.  Once inside you will benefit from the information your guide has given and be better able to appreciate Michelangelo’s wonderful ceiling frescoes and those on the walls painted by Botticelli and his contemporaries.

It is then time for a tour of St. Peter’s Basilica where you will explore the numerous side chapels with their hidden crypts. You will see Michelangelo’s Pietà and your guide will explain why this is the only work that he signed. You will gain an appreciation of the mastery that went into the creation of Bernini’s altarpiece and learn how Michelangelo triumphed over his contemporaries for the honour to paint St. Peter’s magnificent dome.
